This course is designed to help therapists in a variety of outpatient settings understand the impact of HIPAA and FERPA on their therapeutic practice. In the first section, we will set the stage for the learning that will take place in this course. You will learn about the course objectives, and the current context for mental health professionals as it pertains to the incorporation of HIPAA and FERPA laws into mental health practice. This is followed by a deeper dive into the law of FEPRA. Participants will learn more about information protected in this law, who is subject to FEPRA, and how it applies to mental health practice.

Finally, we combine and apply all of the preceding material. You have learned the basics of HIPAA. You have learned the basics of FERPA. So, now how do these laws practically play out in the context of mental health practice?

In this section, you will learn more about the key similarities and differences between these 2 laws and gain a better understanding of how they work together in various contexts of practice.

You will find two supplemental documents and resources linked before the start of the video lecture content. These resources will be referenced in the video lecture and explained further in the application of the content.

This course is primarily structured through video lectures with supplemental reading, resources for application into practice, and built-in quizzes to confirm learner understanding.
