This 4.25-hour recorded asynchronous distance learning course reviews an ethics course created for mental health professionals who have completed an EMDRIA approved basic training course and are ready to expand their EMDR therapy practice to individuals of different age and developmental ranges. The course explores how to effectively modify Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for diverse age groups and developmental needs. This course provides practical strategies for adapting EMDR techniques to meet the developmental needs of children, adolescents, and other specialized populations. Participants will gain hands-on tools and build confidence in tailoring EMDR interventions to enhance client outcomes across the lifespan.
The course is composed of a webinar-style video presentation with a corresponding post-test and course evaluation. Participants must complete both and receive a pass score of at least 80% to receive a certificate of completion.
This course is appropriate for social workers, mental health professionals, and professional counselors who have completed basic training in EMDR therapy.
Contents
This course explores how to effectively adapt Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for clients across different developmental stages, from young children to older adults. While the standard eight-phase EMDR model provides a strong foundation for trauma treatment, modifications are often necessary to align with a client’s cognitive, emotional, and relational needs. Participants will learn the guiding principles that inform these adaptations, ensuring that EMDR remains both effective and developmentally appropriate.
A key focus of the course is the application of the eight-phase EMDR approach across the lifespan. Therapists will examine how to implement each phase with various age groups, considering factors such as attention span, emotional regulation capacity, and expressive abilities. Through case examples and practical demonstrations, participants will gain insight into how to maintain fidelity to the EMDR model while making necessary adjustments to enhance client engagement and therapeutic outcomes. Participants will also explore how to modify EMDR protocols for specific developmental stages.
Beyond individual case application, this training will provide guidance on effective treatment planning for clients at different life stages. Participants will learn to assess developmental readiness, determine appropriate pacing for EMDR therapy, and integrate alternative interventions when necessary. The course will also introduce specialized protocols that can be used when the standard approach may not be the best fit, including modified bilateral stimulation techniques and adaptations for complex trauma presentations.
By the end of the training, participants will feel more confident in their ability to tailor EMDR therapy to meet the needs of clients across the lifespan. With a deeper understanding of how to adjust protocols while preserving the integrity of EMDR, therapists will be better equipped to facilitate meaningful healing for clients of all ages.
You will find supplemental documents and resources linked in the course content. These resources will be referenced in the video lecture and explained further in the application of the content.
This course is primarily structured through video lectures with supplemental reading, resources for application into practice, and built-in quizzes to confirm learner understanding.
